Communication in Small Groups
Recess Groups:
Ms. Donna, Ms. Matula and myself coordinate recess groups once a week per grade level (kinder- garten through third grade ) to encourage social language, motor skills and peer relations in a structured play setting during the child's recess time. Children are asked to join in an informal manner which changes the dynamics of the group each week. The ratio for the recess group is one
adult to three or four children.
Cooking Groups:
Ms. Matula, Ms. Donna and myself prepare a simple, healthy snack with a small group of first
through third graders each week to stimulate following directions, basic math skills, social
language and healthy food choices. The same group of 8 to 10 children participate each week to
provide continuity and build friendships.
Chippewa Explorers:
Once a month, Ms. Matula, Ms. Donna and myself, along with paraprofessional's, supervise
five to eight first through third graders as we explore Palos Heights. As part of our Social Studies
curriculum, the children have visited The Palos Heights Police and Fire Department, Palos Heights
Post Office and Library to name a few. Each Explorers 'field trip' has been a rich language learning
experience and an opportunity to familiarize the children with their community.
